Tadkewali Mixed dal with smoky flavour

Hello dear readers! Today I will share a very tasty dal recipe which I cook often at my place. Many a times I give smoky flavour to some of the dishes which enhances the taste and the aroma is just too good. This time I used readymade mixed dal but you may mix dals of your choice. Giving smoky flavour is optional.

Ingredients:

Mixed dal – 1 cup(handful each of tur dal, masoor dal, moong dal)

Tomato – 1 ,chopped

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Hing – 1 pinch

Green chilly – 1

Chilly powder – 1tsp

Ghee – 2 tsp

Garlic – 2 tbsp , chopped

Red chilly – 3-4

Cinnamon – 1″

Kasuri methi – few pinches for garnish

For smoky flavour:

Coal – 1 piece

Whole garam masala – few (cardamom, cloves)

Ghee – 1tsp

Small bowl or foil

Method:

  1. Wash dal and add enough water and cook it with tomato and turmeric powder for 2 whistles.
  2. Dont over cook the dal.
  3. Once cooked, add salt to taste and green chilly , adjust the consistency by adding water if required and take a boil.
  4. For the first tadka/seasoning, heat a tsp of ghee and cumin seeds, red chillies, hing and cinnamon.
  5. Season it to dal.
  6. For the second tadka, heat a tsp of ghee and saute chopped garlic until reddish in colour.
  7. Switch off the flame and add chilly powder.
  8. Season it to the dal.
  9. Garnish with crushed kasuri methi.
  10. For smoky flavour, heat a piece of coal over gas, then transfer it in a small bowl.
  11. Keep the bowl inside the dal carefully, add some whole garam masala over the coal and tsp of ghee and immediately close the lid.
  12. Keep it closed for 10 minutes.
  13. Once done, remove the bowl carefully out.
  14. Serve the dal hot with steamed rice or roti.
